Laura was in a restaurant quietly having her breakfast. She amused herself, watching the crowd of patrons and service staff as they made their way through the breakfast rush on this, particularly busy morning. As Laura sipped her coffee, she saw a situation unfolding at the counter and nearly spat her coffee out. She had seen the waitress clandestinely do something. She knew she had to bring this act to the public’s attention, which is why she thought her phone’s camera would be perfect.

An Inkling
A regular at the Waffle House, Laura Wolf, had an intuition about a particular waitress that worked there. One morning, her suspicions were confirmed when Laura saw her manipulating the food on an elderly customer’s plate. The waitress glanced around suspiciously before continuing her weird behavior but failed to see Laura watching her in amazement. She obviously thought that she was being far more discrete than she actually was being.

The waitress was Evoni Williams, an 18-year-old, who had been employed by the Waffle House for quite some time. Her job enabled her to save for college, which was her ultimate goal. Waitressing can be tough, which is something anyone who has handled the situation would know. Some days were tiring, and some were purely exhausting. Little did she know that one action recorded on camera would change the lives of everyone who was involved.

That morning, the restaurant was humming with activity, and Evoni was rushed off her feet, serving a seemingly never-ending stream of customers. The service counter was backing up with completed orders that she needed to take to various tables. Her initial fast-paced reaction time, slowed as her energy dipped. She was running out of time and motivation. It was at that moment that a chance request from a diner took her aback.

Laura had, in the meantime, noticed an elderly man sitting at the counter. She did not remember having seen him before. Adrien Charpentier, who was well known amongst wait staff in the hospitality industry. Those that knew him well had even accorded him a nickname. He was an eccentric but friendly gentleman, happy to listen to anyone’s problems. As Evoni went about her duties, the elderly man quietly requested something a bit unusual.

He was clearly in a bad way and did not look like he had much time left. Evoni was leaning down to hear him speak the words that would alter the course of her life. All the while, the chef was yelling out for her, but she did not seem to hear him at all. It was then that the expression on her face revealed all.

As Laura tried to listen in, she realized that the old man was using an oxygen tank and looked as if he was fighting for breath. All the while, the chef was yelling out for her, but she did not seem to hear him at all. It was then that the expression on her face revealed all.

With fortitude, Evoni ignored everyone else vying for her attention and deftly pulled the old customers’ plate of ham towards her. It looked as if she was doing something to the food that Laura could not believe. She was almost shameless in her efforts, but nevertheless, she tried to be as sneaky as possible as she did the deed. Never had she seen a waitress treat a customer like this. She knew she needed to do something.

Laura did not know what the elderly man had said to Evoni, and could only guess based on Evoni’s reaction to his words. Evoni was intent on what she was doing, before looking over her shoulder to see if her actions had been observed. She appeared to be satisfied and pleased with the results of her actions. It was that shameless look of achievement that horrified Laura the most. Laura could not let this go unnoticed, so she got her phone out.

Flash off, Laura took pictures of the scene unfolding at the old man’s table. These were the snaps that would result in both her and Evoni becoming social media famous. Even though her view was not ideal, Laura had seen Evoni’s elbows moving up and down. The waitresses’ actions would soon be made public. She was on the verge of exposing this abuse of the elderly and Evoni was not going to get away with this.

Evoni’s customer was also looking at her expectedly. He seemed a little weak, and his respirations speeded up as she returned his plate to him. Laura could not see his face, but she did see Evoni grinning as she pushed his plate over to him and watched him pick up his fork. Some strange and unusual event was taking place, and Laura did not like any of it. Her work here was done.

Just then, Laura managed to hear what the old man said to Evoni, and his words tugged at her heartstrings. She scrolled through the photos she had taken, picked the best one, and wrote an accompanying text. She then clicked on the share button. As she asked her waiter for her bill, her phone started chiming with notification after notification. The deed was done. Evoni was now in the public eye. Laura meanwhile, had no idea that there was someone else there that morning, also recording the event.

Unbeknown to Evoni, her actions had also been recorded on the in house CCTV camera. Her instinct to do what she had, also had her completing what she had started, despite the kitchen staff warning her of the back up at the collection counter. Was she about to lose her job for participating in some immoral act? When she had finished, her customer sadly explained to her, “my hands don’t work too good.”

Adrien’s sad words to Evoni had been overheard by Laura, who had watched Evoni cut up the man’s food before rushing off to continue her duties. Seeing this kind of act had had such an effect on her, that she had to take photos and post them online. She could not wait for thousands of people to weigh in on the situation. Would the social media audience think the same way as she had?

Laura’s post stated: “Without hesitation, she took his plate and began cutting up his ham. I’m thankful to have seen this act of kindness and caring at the start of my day while everything in this world seems so negative.” In a matter of days, the post had been liked 99 000 times and shared 47 000 times. And the best was to come for Evoni. How would she be treated after this selfless act?

The fateful post was also seen by influential persons who opined that Evoni deserved some accolades for her kindness. Sometime later, Evoni was working her usual shift when the Mayor of La Marque, Bobby Hocking, walked in the door. He came bearing a gift for Evoni, an extensive check. She could not comprehend what was happening. Who had written out this check, and how did they know this was exactly what she was working towards financially?

The check, made out to Evoni, was for $16 000 from Texas State University. They were, in fact, offering her a scholarship. Evoni stated that she assisted Adrien because it was the humane thing to do. She did not expect to be rewarded, so when she was given the check, she was tearfully grateful. She had been given enough money to make all of her dreams come true, and then some!

Her manager at the Waffle House was ecstatic that one of his staff was being congratulated and acknowledged as not only a great waitress but as a kind soul as well. There was genuinely one proud person, and that was Adrien. Evoni’s humanity meant everything to him as his health declined. She had shown him the kind of kindness that he would always remember in this world that is so often negligible of the elderly and the infirm.

‘Mr. Karaoke’ was the nickname Adrien was given by his admirers. He had told Evoni that he had been hospitalized numerous times over the last month or so after contracting pneumonia. He also disclosed to ABC that he could hold a knife and fork, but struggled to cut his food into pieces due to muscle weakness in his hands. The gentleman was clearly in a very bad way and needed all the help that he could get.

As Evoni explained in an interview, if you need help, I’m here to assist you. She had heard the cook shouting out that orders were ready, but she carried on helping Adrien, as she would have if anyone else had asked. She had risked her job for this old man and had been rewarded for her sacrifice. This was an incredible act of selfless service to those who need our assistance.

As Adrien explained, he needed assistance, and the waitress obliged out the kindness of her heart. Social media obviously loved the story, but Evoni and Laura never thought the post would be seen by someone like Bobby Hosking. As you can see from the picture below, the elder was brought to tears by this rare act of compassion and service. More people need to take after Evoni’s example as a role model.

This is an indication of the love we are going to perpetuate in La Marque. Still, he wanted to show Evonia somehow that her actions were appreciated. Every small good deed should be rewarded, to make sure that more people help each other out and show more warmth.

The Mayor came up with a fantastic way to show Evoni how special she was. He honored her actions by naming March 8, Evoni Williams Day. Evoni was so delighted she could not believe that a single act of kindness would lead to this. Being awarded an incredible cheque is one thing, but having your actions immortalized is a phenomenal honor that few people will ever receive. This was a suitable reward, don’t you think?

The University of Texas administrator, Melinda Spaulding, says they did not want Evoni’s kind act to her fellow mankind to be forgotten. She stated that Evoni has demonstrated the traits that the University looks for in their students. She further hoped that their scholarship would enable Evoni to fulfill her goals of opening her own restaurant and hair salon. We really hope that Evoni succeeded in her dreams and is thriving today!
