A Fateful Event
As Laura tried to listen in, she realized that the old man was using an oxygen tank and looked as if he was fighting for breath. Evoni was leaning down to hear him speak the words that would alter the course of her life. He spoke softly, and his troubled breathing made it all the harder to make out his words. All the while, the chef was yelling out for her, but she did not seem to hear him at all. It was then that the expression on her face revealed all.

With fortitude, Evoni ignored everyone else vying for her attention and deftly pulled the old customers’ plate of ham towards her. It looked as if she was doing something to the food that Laura could not believe. She was almost shameless in her efforts, but nevertheless, she tried to be as sneaky as possible as she did the deed. Never had she seen a waitress treat a customer like this. She knew she needed to do something.
