Oh, the 1970’s! The years where flower power ruled, political turmoil occurred, video games began, and of course, it was all done wearing bell-bottom, flared and flowery, pants. Models, musicians, sports athletes, and Hollywood greats; we decided to check in with some of the biggest female stars from this memorable era, see where they are now and how their careers began. These are the psychedelic soul sisters that rocked the world.

Linda Ronstadt is the famous musician who is also known as the “First Lady of Rock” and “Queen of Rock”. She first began performing in Troubadour, West Hollywood, winning herself 10 Grammy Awards and over 30 gold and platinum records over the span of her career. She continued to perform until 2012 when she was sadly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which led to her retirement. In 2013 she published a memoir called Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir, about her experiences in the limelight.

Goldie Hawn was actually a professional dancer before she became the big movie star we know and love. In 1969 she landed her first big role with Cactus Flower, where she earned herself an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Since then, she has made many movies and made quite a name for herself in Hollywood. She is still acting today, though she took a break in the early 2000s.

Pam Grier really made a name for herself throughout the 1970s, starting with The Big Doll House in 1971 and The Bird Cage in 1972. The Big Doll House was actually filmed in the Philippines, where she contracted a deadly tropical disease, which took her nearly a year to recover from! Pam was also the first black woman to feature on the cover of MS Magazine in August 1975. She has made many movies since then, had a little break and made her comeback in 1997 when she landed the role of Jackie Brown, in Quentin Tarantino’s blockbuster film of the same name. Pam was actually diagnosed with cancer in 1988 and given 18 months to live, she changed her lifestyle, and defied expectations and is still with us today and still acting!

Linda Grey began her career in the 1960s doing television commercials until she landed the role of Sue Ewing on Dallas in 1978, which she stayed with until 1989, and which earned her numerous nominations for various awards in the industry. In 1991, she starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in Oscar, and has had a number of other roles since then. She also performs on stage in the West End in London.

Kim Basinger started out as a model, offered a contract on the spot by Ford Models, and became a top model during the 1970’s – by the time she was 20 she was earning $1000 a day! In 1976 Kim decided to take on Hollywood and began appearing in series like Charlie’s Angels, and landed the role of the Bond Girl in Never Say Never Again (1983). In 1997, Kim earned herself an Oscar for her performance in L.A. Confidential, the film noir classic. Kim is still acting today, and we look forward to hearing what is next for her!

Billie Jean King is the sports legend who became famous after winning the tennis match against Bobby Riggs in 1973, which became known as “The Battle of the Sexes”, later becoming a film depicting the event in which Emma Stone played Billie. Billie was an avid advocate for gender equality, getting big companies to sponsor female sports. In 1987 she was introduced to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and was also the first prominent athlete to come out as gay in 1981.

Kim is still active in Hollywood today with her latest roles in 2017 with Morgan Freeman in Going in Style, and in Papa in 2018. Ann has also been nominated for a Grammy for her music career. Her neon-orange hair is one of the most iconic looks of her time.

These are some of our most thrilling and enjoyable films of all time. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002, and mostly retired from performing since 2007, and now serves as the National Ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In 1972 Cicely acted in Sounder which led to an Academy Award nomination, and in 1974 she played a 110-year old former slave in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, earning herself two Emmy awards for the performance, and really putting herself on the Hollywood map. Today she is 93 years old and is still amazingly active in Hollywood!

She has furthered the public’s understanding of and compassion for autistic people amazingly.

Debbie Harry was actually born as Angela Tremble, and is the lead singer of the hit 70’s group Blondie, who released their first album in 1976 becoming very successful. Blondie took a 15-year-break, and began recording again in 1997, and to this day they still perform and even released an album as recently as 2017. Debbie was inspired to do more philanthropic work by Elton John, saying, “After witnessing Elton John and his tireless efforts against HIV/AIDS. These things are important to my life now. I have the privilege of being able to get involved, so I do. I applaud people like Elton John, who have used their position to do so much good.”

Jacqueline Bisset’s role in The Detective (1968), opposite Frank Sinatra, was the role that propelled her into the spotlight, and by the time the 1970s were over she had appeared in 17 movies! And she is still acting today, with two movies in 2017 and several projects in the making as you read this. Daryl Hannah finished studying ballet and acting at the University of South California, and soon after got her first on-screen role in the horror film The Fury in 1979. Hannah really made it big in the 1980s when she landed roles in films like Splash with Tom Hanks, Steel Magnolias, The Little Rascals, My Favorite Martian, A Walk to Remember, and Crimes and Misdemeanors, and more recently, Kill Bill and Blade Runner. Lola Falana rose to fame with her multi-talents in acting, dancing, and singing, and with some help from Dinah Washington and Sammy Davis Jr. Lola was actually born in New Jersey and grew up in Philadelphia but actually made her break into stardom in Italy, where she became a pretty big name in Italian cinema. She got her American film debut with The Liberation of L.B. Jones in 1970, and later earned herself the nickname “Queen of Las Vegas” when she had a dance show there. Sadly, in 1987 Lola was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and stopped acting and performing in 1989, although she did do a stage appearance for a local theater in Branson, Missouri in 1997. Lola now spends a lot of her time working with the church group she founded, and a charity that helps children in Africa called Save Sub-Saharan Orphans.

After the show ended, Jaclyn continued to act and was in numerous television shows and films, and is also a clothing designer, and is actually one of the first celebrities to have released her very own clothing line! She has been married since 1997 to Dr. Brad Allen, a cardiothoracic surgeon. In 2003 she had a tough battle with breast cancer and thankfully beat it, and years later actually appeared in a documentary about breast cancer.
