While there were plans to have him buried near his father, André’s will state otherwise. He wanted his ashes to be returned to the United States, where he was buried in a garden at his former home in North Carolina. His death would mean a lump sum of money was soon going to his daughter, Robin.

A lot of close friends report that despite his stature, André was an emotionally sensitive person. HBO’s André the Giant documentary includes statements from colleagues detailing how there were times when his size embarrassed him a lot, including having to urinate in buckets on flights, as he couldn’t fit into the restroom.

André struggled wherever he went. While there are concessions made for a multitude of disabled people now, back then it wasn’t as much of a priority, especially as gigantism was so rare.
