The celebrated anthropologist and primatologist, Dian Fossey, wrote her essential work on primate conservation, titled Gorillas in the Mist. Fossey was widely regarded as the modern leader in primate understanding and protection, having spent much of her life in Rwanda, where she battled poaching and developed safe spaces for her beloved animals.

As one could imagine, Rwanda was not the safest of places for a rebellious conservationist at the time. The corrupt government was only too happy to adhere to her rival poachers’ demands, leading to her assassination on a dark December day in 1985. She was discovered butchered in her bed.
