Giant Earnings for a Giant-Sized Human
André was 1974’s highest-paid wrestler, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He was earning over $350 000 back then, which in today’s terms is massive. Add another million to the total if you consider his endorsement deals and appearances too.
This meant that André the Giant led quite a charmed lifestyle. Traveling in a large van or flying in first class, he could also afford his drinking habit without having to worry about his bank balance. For all the pain, it helps to know that his life came to an end while he was sleeping peacefully, which is reassuring considering all the pain he was in throughout.
That Time André Nearly Drowned Two People
In his HBO documentary, director Jason Hehir shared a story that didn’t make the final cut. A fight between three well-known wrestlers and André after a night of drinking, led to him grabbing two of the wrestlers and drowning them both in the surf. The third came to their eventual rescue, convincing André to go back into the bar. It is said that he carried on drinking as nothing happened.
