Late 1990s sci-fi movies were a hit. Notable advancements in the genre include Dark City and The Matrix. Another was Starship Troopers. Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven, follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico through an interplanetary struggle with an extraterrestrial society called Arachnids. Aside from the massive bug splattering carnage, this sci-fi epic featured several key concepts. It may have fallen flat at the movie office, but it’s humorous social satire on war and fascism has made it a cult favorite. Without an outstanding ensemble cast, the film would not exist. Let’s look at the Troopers’ careers to see who made it onboard Klendathu and who didn’t. Ready?
Casper Van Dien As Johnny Rico
Casper Van Dien, the actor behind the handsome Johnny Rico, must be at the top of the list, of course. It’s safe to say he was fearless, strong, and most all, successful in taking down a large number of dangerous insects. In addition to his courageous fighting talents, Rico had a classic all-American demeanor and appearance that made him appealing to the audience as a whole. It’s almost as if filmmaker Paul Verhoeven was making fun of the conventional action movie hero in this picture. To be clear, Rico was a likable character even before the events in the film!
