Almost Human
Travis seemed to be becoming more and more like a human with every passing day. He enjoyed watching television and could operate the remote control, and watching baseball matches was one of his favorite activities. Even more incredibly, Travis learned how to use a computer and browse through pictures! Perhaps his most impressive act was driving a car, though. One of the Herlods’ neighbors loved playfully wrestling with Travis, and remarked on how gentle and restrained he was. This gentleness would make the tragedy that was to come all the more shocking.

A Friend In Need
Eventually, Jerome, who was Travis’s beloved human father, and Sandra’s husband of many years, would sadly pass away. The grieving Sandra, who was 70 years old at the time, would then have to run the trucking business largely on her own. She would soon enjoy some help, thankfully, when she employed Charla Nash. This kind-hearted woman would not only help Sandra to manage her business, but also her personal life, including the chimp that would one day turn her life upside-down.
