Travis was, of course, a wild animal. One that should have never been kept as a pet. Unlike domesticated animals like cats and dogs, chimpanzees will always have a wild element, no matter how tame and loving they seem. The Herolds were wrong to have taken Travis in and treated him like a human in the first place, and wild animals should only ever be kept by wildlife specialists. As sad as this situation was, it did have some positive consequences.

Not long after the attack, the Captive Primate Safety Act was introduced by US Representative Earl Blumenauer on January 6, 2009. This new law effectively prohibited ordinary people to keep great apes, lemurs, and monkeys as pets. From that point onward, tragedies like the one involving Travis would be far less likely to happen again. As for Charla, her life would never be the same again. She would, however, make sure that more people knew about her story and be wiser for it.
