It makes sense then that Chita had an inherent love for humans and could easily become friends with them. While he enjoyed special connections with people, the downside was that he struggled to get along with his kind. Given that chimps struggle to talk about their disagreements, things were bound to get ugly in Chita’s pen. It was in 2008 that Chita got into a violent disagreement with the other chimps in his enclosure and was seriously hurt as a result. Will there be no redemption for poor Chita?

According to a related study conducted on chimpanzees by the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, it might be too late for Chita. The study found that chimpanzees, like humans, will have their behavior and later relationships largely shaped by their upbringing. The best way to understand Chita’s situation in his enclosure is to think of it like a human being stuck with chimps. It seemed like Timmermans could not see the sense of these studies, or the zookeepers’ actions, however.
