Despite their seemingly indomitable presence on the ice, the Soviet Union was finally beaten by their American rivals with a 4-3 win. It was Mike Eruzione’s Miracle on Ice winning play advance that secured the winning gold medal for America.

July 23, 1996, at the Atlanta Olympics. Even an agonizing ankle injury could not stop Kerri Strug from striking a sensational pose after she stuck her vault landing. Strug had mangled her ankle in her previous and initial attempt. With the entire United States Olympic team’s chances of taking the gold medal riding on her shoulders, Strug put her body on the line for a golden title. This is the kind of endurance and commitment that goes down in sporting legend.
