Roger Bannister

August 7, 1954, at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Better known as the “Miracle Mile”, Roger Bannister shattered the mile-long four minutes record for the first time while dashing against John Landy. Landy happened to be the sole breaker of this record before Bannister outran him. Upon his victory, Bannister was handed the “Sportsman of the Year” award by Sports Illustrated, a first for any athlete. This was the beginning of Bannister’s eternal legend.

Pittsburgh Pirates Fans

October 13, 1960, at the World Series. An energetic bunch of students at the University of Pittsburg cheerfully support their team from a dizzying height. The stadium far below the students is the Forbes Field, which the Cathedral of Learning campus looms over. The youths had good cause for celebration, as the Pirates had just taken their initial World Series against the Yankees after 35 years of disappointment. Bill Mazeorski whacked the initial walk-off home run in Game 7 seen in the World Series. This resulted in the Pirates taking a 10-9 victory.
