Had Mark been interested in investing previously, Sara might not have ended up being as suspicious as she was. The problem was that he had never spoken about investments, and frankly didn’t know anything about how they work. She had brought up the topic once when they started to become more financially secure, but said at the time that he didn’t have the capacity to effectively keep an eye on any investments, being so busy with work.

Another red flag for Sara was that Mark couldn’t tell her very much about the startup he had invested some of their savings into. The details he gave were scarce and sketchy, to say the least. Sara couldn’t find anything about the company online, to which Mark said that they were still in the very early funding phase, so there wouldn’t be all too much about them out there in the market. Needless to say, alarm bells were quickly ringing for Sara when he gave this excuse.
