The Zoo Steps In
Pictured is Sarah Lafaut, the curator of the zoo where Chita lives. She described how she and her colleagues soon began realizing that this oddly dedicated woman was spending an unhealthy amount of time with the chimp in question. Not only that, but the two were interacting at a level that could spell trouble for Chita. Just as Timmermans’s fellow humans were disgusted by her behavior, so too were Chita’s chimpanzee crew. Timmermans’s vocal affection was endangering Chita.

Shunned Chita
Although Chita was having the time of his life with his new human friend, his fellow chimps were not impressed. It seemed that humans were not the only ones that saw this relationship as unnatural. Soon, Chita found himself being treated like a freak by the tribe. This meant that he was spending up to 15 hours a day in isolation. When Chita wasn’t being showered with affection by Timmermans, he was being avoided by his fellow primates. This was something that the zoo employees were desperate to fix.
