Looking back now, Shannon recalls that boot camp was nothing short of an empowering experience, especially considering that she is a woman, and women are looked at a certain way in a male-dominated industry like the military. She learned that she is physically and mentally strong, and she cites the beautiful and smart drill instructors (who were also women) as motivation and inspiration for her to keep going. In spite of this, joining the ranks alongside male counterparts would have its fair share of obstacles too. Many males were out to bring her down, but she was not about to let her guard down.

Working Twice As Hard For Equality

The first thing that comes into everyone’s mind when they think of a Marine, is that of a man. When Shannon first showed up to her unit, many of her male counterparts assumed that she wouldn’t be able to keep up with, or be perfect as them. Not one to be deterred, she continued to push herself, staying patient in the process, and doing whatever she could to prove to them that she could show up as their equal, and at times, perhaps even operating at a higher level than they could.
