The Alpha Personality Comes Through
Physical challenges aside, Shannon was quick to discover that mental strength was one of the biggest obstacles that anyone in the army will face during their course of service. After graduating boot camp, she knew that he had to project mental strength and an alpha personality right from the moment she arrived at her unit, in order for her to be taken seriously. She was not about to be brushed aside, or pushed around. Later, she called this approach an absolute necessity, recalling how quickly it changed the dynamic between her and her peers.

Many of the other Marines initially assumed that Shannon would not be able to keep up physically, making the assumption that she wasn’t as strong as them to begin with. She did everything she could, including training longer and harder, in order to prove to them that this wasn’t the case. Initially placed in an administrative role in South Carolina, she continued to approach her service with determination and the right attitude. In no time, she started to climb the ranks, gaining special skills along the way that enabled her to get promoted with a quicker turnaround time than usual.
