Published on 05/23/2022

At least one line a movie lover will pull from a film and have as their favorite wherever they go. We erasure there are lines from movies such as Mean Girls that can easily be remembered or the popular “life was like a box of chocolates” from Forest Gump’s mom. Whichever way you put it, a famous line can easily live “rent-free” in a person’s head. While we can link some popular lines to our favorite actors, would you believe many of them were unscripted and made up while the movie was being filmed? Improvising on a movie set isn’t a strange occurrence but sometimes happens a lot in comedy movies. Some actors take the initiative to add lines to their scenes. Whether it was accidental or it came through quick knowledge, a lot of these lines turned out to be amazing in the long run. Here are some popular lines that were never a part of the script…

35. Fight Club – “You Hit Me In The Ear”

Brad Pitt was caught off guard with the first punch during the David Fincher’s Fight Club fight scene. One could see Pitt addressing Edward Norton based on the script, then shortly after seeing the two going into a scuffle, resulting in the blow to the side of the head. It was obvious that Pitt felt the blow and was genuine with his feelings. During an interview with Jimmy Fallon back in 2019, Norton admitted Fincher instructed him to make the punch look natural, and not knowing what to do, he had to just hit him in the ear.

34. Zoolander – “But Why Male Models?”

Zoolander was directed and starred by Ben Stiller back in 2001, and it featured Stiller as a male model deeply involved in an assassination ring. He had a meeting with David Duchovny’s character that led to a long explanation of why male actors were used for the assassination scheme. Stiller somehow smoothly incorporated the line “But why male models?” into the movie. It seemed like a great addition that Duchovny didn’t bother to omit and tell them to continue with the lines in the scene.

33. Ghostbusters – “I Feel So Funky”

Ghostbusters is a 1984 classic where Bill Murray, who experienced his first “slimy” ghost encounter in the hotel, uttered, “He slimed me.” However, in the midst of about to call for backup, Murray quickly added the famous line “I feel so funky” so it wouldn’t look out of place. The production team confirmed the ad-libbing during an interview in 2012 with Entertainment Weekly. Murray’s performance was applauded by Jason Reitman, one of the movie director’s son. The team admitted the actor played it out well, given how it blended in well with the rest of the movie.

32. Julie & Julia – “And You Are So Good At It. Look At You!”

This comedy was based on the production of two books: “My Life in France by Julia Child and Alex Prud’homme” and “Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 534 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment”. The book combinations turned movie saw Meryl Streep playing the role of Julia Child, who is trying her best to master the art of French cooking. In contrast, Amy Adams played Julie Powell, a woman who found the need to be at peace documenting her success through Child’s recipe book. The improvised scene came in when she somehow was at a “crossroads” as to how to spend her time in Paris, to which she was told to do what she enjoys most.

The Movie’s director, Donald Petrie, admitted in a 2014 interview with BBC that he told Kate Hudson she had the opportunity to improvise with her Matthew McConaughey so the scene would have some form of chemistry. Petrie notes that he loves the idea of improvs because they create some amazing moments. Hudson and McConaughey are amazing actors who know how to work their way through a scene professionally without breaking character. The famous line was said to be an improvise during an interview with Hollywood Reporter in 2018.

30. The Wolf Of Wall Street – “Sell Me This Pen.”

Martin Scorses is another movie director who is all about improvising in his films, and his 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street, showed that clearly. The famous scene involves Leonardo DiCapri telling someone to sell him a particular pen where the person had to respond with a follow-up response to the question. Interestingly, the scene came from an experience with one of DiCaprio’s security personnel, who, while on the way to the set, explained to him that he had a job interview with Jordan Belfort. His security detailed to him that he was presented with a pen and was told to sell it. DiCaprio found a perfect way to drop the line in.

29. Clueless – “I’m Totally Buggin’ Myself.”

Without a doubt, Clueless was one of the most influential movies of the 90s and was said to be the starting point for terms such as “buggin’.” Doland Faison played Murray’s character, and during an interview with Vulture, he noted co-star Paul Rudd, who played Josh, improvised the scene. After the line was dropped in, Murray said the laugh which came after was genuine because they were not expecting that line to fall in. Interestingly, many other improvs were added throughout the movie that was later revealed in interviews done by the stars.

28. The Shining – “Here’s Johnny.”

Jack Nicholson’s performance in Stanley Kubrick’s film, The Shining, Jack Nicholson’s performance was amazing and one of his best performances throughout his career. During the film, he even made a great improvisation that went smoothly with the film. Interestingly, during the film where he was on a mission to get to his wife and broke down a door with an ax, he pushed through with the line, “Here’s Johnny.” This line was about The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Kubrick, a Brit, somehow didn’t understand what was going on, and the line almost got dropped from the final cut. The film was a pretty hard one to get through as it went over three days and knocked down around 60 doors.

27. The Godfather – “Take The Cannoli.”

This award-winning film saw actor Richard S. Castellano playing the role of Clemenza, not sticking to the script while Rocco was shooting Paulie while he was in a car. His wife, Ardell Sheridan (both onscreen and offscreen), suggested that he cut a particular scene out and replace it with another. It somehow fit in well and was only revealed in an interview done years later. The Godfather itself was a great film, and the line was one of the most iconic unscripted lines from the movie.

26. Taxi Driver – You Talkin’ To Me?”

Having one of your iconic lines from one of your films being repeated to you over and over can be tiring, and we are sure this is how Robert De Niro feels. A line he improvised in the film, Taxi Driver more than 45 years ago has been brought up to him on so many occasions. The line came in after the director told him to look in the mirror and repeat something to himself during the movie breaks. Interestingly, this is the line he kept saying to himself, “You Talkin’ To Me?” Somehow, he meshed the line in well during the movie.

25. Jaws – “You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat.”

Jaws came out in the summer of 1975, and it was a major hit in the movie industry, with movie lovers going crazy about the film. However, many people do not know that one of the movie’s most famous lines was improvised. The movie producers were considered stingy while the movie was in progress and everyone kept telling them they would need a bigger boat. Well, every action that took place while the movie was being filmed, the line would come up until it was smoothly injected into the film.

24. Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back – “I Know.”

This chapter in the series had some highlights, especially having the best romantic scenes one can ever imagine – between Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa. Interestingly, the scene could have gone way different if Ford had gone with the original script. The script should be about Leia telling Han she loves him but couldn’t find the courage to tell him with Han making his response to “I Know.” Han told the director he couldn’t use the original line because it didn’t fit his character.

23. Goodfellas – “Funny How?”

Interestingly, this line in the 1990 mobster film was iconic as it was inspired by a real-life encounter Joe Pesci experienced in real life as a waiter. The scenario involved Pesci trying to compliment a patron by calling him “funny.” It somehow fit into the movie, and the director decided to work with it and watch the flow. The line wasn’t a part of the script, but the way the actor blended it in didn’t seem weird, so no one would know unless it was revealed.

22. Caddyshack – “What A Cinderella Story.”

This movie was another hit from Bill Murray, and his improv of the “Cinderella Story” was indeed a great one. The movie director spoke about the scene after the movie was released, Harold Ramis. Murray was supposed to only practice his golf swings and flowers cutting outside the clubhouse. This occurrence turned out to be the longest scene for Murray in the film. After it was relatively successful, Murray noted how good he was back in the day while pressing through his movie roles.

21. Blade Runner – “All Those Moments Will Be Lost In Time, Like Tears In Rain.”

We have to admit that the Blade Runner had a great impact on the movie industry for years, and director, Ridley Scott, did a great job. However, one of the film’s most iconic moments was the line that talked about “tears in rain.” The director wanted to give the actor the ability to make an impact seeing it was only a short time he had. Seeing it was a character-driven movie, the director allowed actors to explore, and he capitalized on that moment.

20. Titanic – “I’m The King Of The World.”

Titanic is an all-time favorite and could also be considered one of the best romantic films to be created. It was based on the sinking of the RMS Titanic and is a film that has some interesting and memorable quotes. However, this particular line was an intriguing one for the director James Cameron. A few lines were added, but this particular line was a standout. Even though unscripted, DiCaprio may not have wanted to say but initially did, and we can at least say it worked out well.

19. Casablanca – “Here’s Looking At You, Kid.”

The interesting thing about this line is that it wasn’t created in the movie but more so got more popular as it was already being used around the late 1800s. The line was improvised by Humphrey Bogart, whose character was played by Rick Blaine, a nightclub owner. He did the line as he was working through the Paris flashback scene. Seeing the line was blended in so well, the directors interestingly added the line three more times into the movie. The actors had to work their way around the new development so the line could easily fit in.

18. Good Will Hunting – “She Used To Fart In Her Sleep…One Night It Was So Loud It Woke The Dog Up”

Robin Williams could be considered the king of improvs no matter the movie position he worked in. Remember Aladdin? He was the voice actor for that animated character and played well in other comedy and drama movies. The scene involved Williams and a co-star talking medical terms and relationships. Initially, Williams was supposed to talk about his wife turning off his alarm clock and making him late for work. However, he talked about her farting attitude, which made both actors burst into tears. You could easily tell the videographer was laughing as well.

17. Breaking Bad: Season 5, Episode 14 – “Mama, Mama.”

Baby Holly had no script lines, but when she cried out “mama, mama,” everyone on the production team went with it. In an interview with Today, the film’s director, Moira Walley-Beckett, discussed the scene and noted it was unscripted. However, seeing it added some emotional touch to the film, the production team felt good about it.

16. The Princess Diaries – “Not You, I Don’t Even Know You!”

The Princess Diaries was a 2000 classic that featured the likes of starring actresses Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway. However, we have to give credit to Heather Matarazzo, as she was amazing in the film. Garry Marshall (now deceased) was one director who left the atmosphere open for actors to improvise and feel super comfortable with it. Speaking about the late director, actress Anne Hathaway noted that was one of the things about MArshall that many people loved, and once the improv was good, it would be a part of the film. The line came from the team wanting to create a fun and memorable movie.

15. Boy Meets World – “Fe-He-He-He-Heeny.”

This was a classic sitcom of the 90s and having some memorable moments was a major factor to consider when making movies. The show has some great highlights, including the relationship between Will Friedle’s character Eric, and William Daniels’ character, MR. Feeny, who was a teacher and also Eric’s neighbor. One thing people will forever remember from the film was the famous “Mr. Feeny call,” where Eric would funnily call the teacher. 14. Friends: Season 2, Episode 1 – “Okay, You Have To Stop Q-Tip When There’s Resistance.”

Matthew Perry told viewers that he has a favorite Chandler line from the film. The famous line came in when Joey, played by Matt LeBlanc, had his family visit Chandler (his tailor) to make their suits but was confused when his first suit was ever designed. The script should have seen Perry scoffing and walking away, but he thought it would be best to add a little flair. Initially, it worked out well and didn’t throw the film off in any way.

13. The Princess Bride – “Have Fun Storming The Castle.”

This film has fairytale written all over it, and it sure has some amazing moments worth cherishing. Some of these scenarios include the moment Miracle Max the Wizard improvised the line, “Have fun storming the castle.” During later interviews, Billy Crystal noted that many lines in the film were unscripted and were interestingly added on the spot. One of the interesting things about that scene was when Cary wanted to laugh so bad, but he was cast to be mostly dead while fighting to stay alive – we can imagine that struggle!

12. Ghost – “Molly, You In Danger Girl.”

A lot of you may have never seen the full movie, but we know for sure you must have come across the clay pot scene of Unchained Melody. Even though this was an intriguing part of the film, imagining the film without Whoopi Goldberg would be hard. Well, she got the role by an inch! This drawback was because the director thought her “comedy background” would not fully portray the character he was looking for. But, we can safely say the addition was worth it as the results for good in the end.

11. Iron Man – “I Am Iron Man.”

Iron Man was one of the initial films that gave Robert Downey Jr his big break in Hollywood until he worked his way to launching the MCU franchise. The film’s ending was the same as the comics for Tony Stark’s character, but Downey felt the need to add a touch of “gritty” to the film and blurted out, “I am Iron Man.” We can say it meshed in well with the film and worked out to be true for who the character was.

10. The Devil Wears Prada – “Everyone Wants To Be Us.”

Other than Meryl Streep’s performance in the film, we have to agree that some other iconic moments are worth remembering. It is said that Streep was a bit blank with her co-stars while offscreen as she probably didn’t get a chance to have much fun on set. In an interview, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna admitted that she tweaked a few of the lines while on her way to the set, and Streep later added a touch of flair to what she added last minute.

9. Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets – “Reading? I Didn’t Know You Could Read.”

One of the funniest moments from this film is when Slytherin Draco Malfoy, played by Tom Felton, forgot his line. The line came in during the scene where Harry was seen putting on his glasses, and when he revealed he needed them to read, Draco dropped in the line that he didn’t know he could do that. There are other great takeaways from the film that we know many Harry Potter fans have living in their heads rent-free.

8. How I Met Your Mother: Season 6, Episode 13 – “My Dad’s Dead? I’m Not Ready For This”

A lot of us will agree that this film has some interesting scenes and memories that we will cherish forever. However, we can all agree that one of the saddest and most heart-wrenching moments was when Marshall’s dad died in season six. Jason Segel, who plays the role of Marshall, knew there would be a big plot twist initially but didn’t know his character’s father’s death would be it. His onscreen wife, Lily (played by Alyson Hannigan), was supposed to say his father didn’t make it, but all we know is that his final line was completely improvised.

Chris Pratt played a role in that film, and as Leslie was leaving office, Pratt managed to capture the whole thing with a camera he had with him. There was an improvised moment in the film, and after the final watch, they initially included it. The actors noted they didn’t have a problem with it, and Leslie admitted it could have passed as one of the funniest parts of this series.

6. Avengers: Infinity War – “I Don’t Wanna Go.”

You were not the only movie lover who got emotional when this scene came up in the iconic film. The movie was already tense, so to have a scene like this made it worse for some people to watch without crying uncontrollably. Imagine this being Tom Holland’s last words before he turned into dust in Iron Man’s Arms…we are sure that was too much to handle. Then again, a movie is supposed to have a high point, and while the series already had so much to take from it…one last one wouldn’t hurt.

In an interview with The Vulture, one actress from the film noted that scene was one of her favorite takeaways from the film. Seeing it was unexpected, they had to laugh on set and smoothly played around with it genuinely. Who could tell it was an improv if they didn’t say.

3. Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy – “I Love Lamp.”

One thing is for sure: if you put Steve Carell and Will Ferrell in the same room, you can expect to get a good dose of laughter. During the filming of the movie, the actor was told there were no more lines for him, so he should just say something, and this was when he came up with this famous line as well as another one “I ate a big red candle.” It sure was a moment for the entire cast and production team to work through, but in the end, they found a way to work them out.

2. Midnight Cowboy – “I’m Walkin’ Here!”

Midnight Cowboy was an extremely low-budget film, and during one of the scenes, Ratso Rizzo almost got hit by a cab – in real life! The actor, knowing how to improvise well, quickly came up with the line “I’m walkin’ here,” and the director loved it right away and decided it had to be a part of the movie. The driver later jumped out of the van to ask what was happening, and they somehow got to redo the scene and made it an initial part of the film.

1. Dazed And Confused – “Alright, Alright, Alright.”

Before gaining traction with the McConnaissance, Matthew McConaughey, an Oscar-winning actor, attached his name to a famous line from the 1993 hit movie, Dazed and Confused. He noted he got his inspiration from a radio show he was listening to with Jim Morrison, who repeated the word “alright” four times. That was something he found fascinating, and after finding the perfect moment in the film, he knew he had to use it. This was later revealed in an interview the actor did.
